Fire personnel of PCMC and PMRDA rescued the youth from a tower on Gahunje Road in Mamurdi on Sunday after about three and a half hours.

Panic spread in the Mamurdi area of Pimpri Chinchwad on Sunday when a youth climbed a mobile tower on Gahunje Road. The matter is said to have been related to marriage. Fire personnel of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) brought him down safely after about three and a half hours.

It began around 4 pm. The youth climbed to a considerable height on the tower and sat there. A crowd gathered at the spot on seeing him, and the administration had to act immediately.

Fire officer Gautam Ingawale said the fire department had received an emergency call that a man had climbed a mobile tower in the Gahunje area. Teams were sent to the spot at once. Help was also sought from the PMRDA for the rescue.

On receiving the information, the PCMC fire department dispatched fire engines from its main fire station and the Pradhikaran station. Officials also contacted the PMRDA. A Bronto skylift vehicle was brought to the spot to reach the youth sitting atop the tower. The effort continued for about three and a half hours, and the fire personnel finally brought him down safely.

According to Ingawale, the preliminary information is that the youth wanted to marry a particular girl and had climbed the tower for that reason.

A local resident present at the spot was reminded of the famous water tank scene from the Bollywood film Sholay. In that scene, the character Veeru, played by Dharmendra, climbs a water tank and threatens to jump because his marriage proposal to Basanti is opposed.

The rescue operation on Gahunje Road in Mamurdi began around 4 pm on Sunday and lasted about three and a half hours. Fire personnel of both the PCMC and the PMRDA worked together, and the youth was brought down unharmed.
