Indapur recorded the highest rainfall in Pune district in the 24 hours to Monday morning, with waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city and rural areas.

Indapur received the heaviest rain in Pune district in the 24 hours up to 8.30 am on Monday, November 2, when the gauge showed 131 mm. Baramati came next with 77.2 mm. Rain through the night left many parts of rural Pune under water, with Baramati and Indapur among the worst hit. Waterlogging at Chakan also held up vehicles on the roads there.

Among the other stations, Ambegaon logged 49.5 mm and Shivajinagar 41.1 mm. Dhamdhere measured 39.5 mm and Shirur 39 mm. A separate weather report issued at 8.30 am on Monday put Lohegaon at 36.2 mm. In the city and its surroundings, Hadapsar had 35.5 mm, Haveli 35 mm and Magarpatta 30.5 mm. Chinchwad got 19.5 mm, Pashan 14.6 mm and the National Defence Academy (NDA) area 5.5 mm.

Elsewhere in the district the showers were lighter. For the period from 8.30 am on November 1 to 8.30 am on November 2, Bhor recorded 17.5 mm, Talegaon 14 mm, Purandar 5 mm and Daund 2.5 mm.

The first showers reached Pune city at about 8.30 pm on Sunday, and heavy rain returned around midnight. It then grew stronger, flooding many main roads and inner lanes. Rain was still falling after 9 am on Monday. Traffic crawled through the morning rush, and some signals went off, which made the jams worse. Traffic police said the water on the roads and the rain had cut vehicle speeds.

Branches snapped and dropped at several spots. Around midnight a big tree came down in the Khadki Bazaar area, though nobody was injured. Fire brigade staff cleared the fallen trees and branches and helped get traffic moving again.

The downpour also struck the temporary Diwali stalls in the Mahatma Phule Mandai and Shaniwar Peth areas. Water got into shops and spoiled goods. With festive buying just gathering pace, traders and vendors rushed to protect their stock.

The weather update also recorded relative humidity of 100 per cent at both Shivajinagar and Chinchwad. The minimum temperature was 21.2 degrees Celsius at Shivajinagar and 21.3 degrees Celsius at Chinchwad.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a two-day rain warning for Pune and nearby areas. Its local forecast, issued on Sunday, says the sky should stay mainly clear on Monday and Tuesday, turning partly cloudy by afternoon or evening, with very light to light rain possible on both days. Pune can expect a high of 33 degrees Celsius and a low of 22 degrees Celsius on Monday, and a high of 32 degrees Celsius and a low of 23 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Wednesday afternoon or evening should be partly cloudy, and Thursday to Saturday should stay mainly clear.
