Police have tightened security and traffic arrangements in central Pune's market areas as Diwali shoppers throng the city's traditional bazaars.

Heavy crowds are filling Pune's markets as Diwali shopping begins. In view of this, the city police have tightened security and traffic arrangements in the market areas of central Pune. People are arriving to shop from different parts of Pune district, and additional police personnel have been deployed to manage crowds, prevent thefts and keep vehicles moving.

The biggest crowds are being seen at Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, Mahatma Phule Mandai and Shaniwar Peth, where people are coming to buy Diwali goods. Crowded lanes carry a risk of theft of jewellery, cash and other valuables, and women visiting these markets in particular are considered to be at greater risk.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said local police teams and the Crime Branch have been directed to remain clearly visible in the markets and to patrol regularly. Officers have also been told to act immediately if they notice any suspicious activity or receive a complaint of theft.

On the narrow, busy streets of the old city, shoppers, pedestrians and vehicles all crowd in together, so traffic has been given special attention. The traffic police have posted additional staff at key intersections and locations. Traffic volunteers are also helping them to keep traffic moving and deal with jams.

Police have also instructed officers to take prompt action against anyone found causing disorder or engaging in unlawful activity in crowded places.

The police administration has also told the in-charges of all police stations in the city to stay alert during the festival and maintain law and order.

Shopkeepers and traders have also been asked to cooperate with the police. They have been urged not to let unauthorised roadside vendors set up handcarts or stalls directly in front of their shops. Such encroachments inconvenience pedestrians and worsen congestion on market roads that are already packed.

The crowds are expected to continue until the festival. The police focus is therefore both on the safety of people and on keeping movement easy in Pune's traditional markets.
