Goods vehicles can enter the core market areas only between 9 pm and 9 am, Pune traffic police said, to prevent jams during Diwali shopping.

Pune, October 28, 2026: To prevent traffic jams in the city's central market areas during the Diwali shopping rush, Pune traffic police have banned the entry of goods vehicles during the day. The restriction has been in force since October 26 and will continue till November 12.

Under the new rule, goods vehicles can enter the designated areas only between 9 pm and 9 am. Delivery and unloading of goods must also be done in this window, which means goods vehicles are not allowed into these areas during the day.

The restriction covers several of the city's major commercial areas. These include Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, Tilak Road, Bajirao Road, Mahatma Phule Mandai, Shaniwar Peth's Shanipar and Tulshibaug. Bohri Aali in Raviwar Peth, Ganesh Peth and Shukrawar Peth are also covered. The ban also applies at Pasodya Vithoba Chowk, Moti Chowk and Tapkir Galli in Budhwar Peth.

These markets draw large crowds of shoppers during Diwali. People from Pune city and the surrounding suburbs come here to buy clothes and other festival goods. If goods vehicles ply during the day, congestion could worsen, causing trouble for shoppers and other road users.

To avoid this, traffic police have asked goods transporters to plan their deliveries between 9 pm and 9 am so that the market roads are not needlessly strained during the day.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr Sandeep Bhajibhakare said the restrictions have been imposed in view of the expected rise in the number of shoppers in the festival season. He appealed to transporters to follow the stipulated timings and not bring their vehicles into the restricted market areas during the day.
