The proposal, aimed at preserving the legacy of the Poona Pact, now goes to the PMC general body for consideration and approval.

The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal to install a full-length statue of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in Pune. The proposal aims to preserve the historic legacy of the Poona Pact.

The proposal was moved by Suhas Vijay Tingre, a corporator and member of the standing committee. With the committee's approval, the next step is to place it before the PMC general body for consideration and approval.

According to Tingre, the initiative is meant to keep alive the historic significance of the Poona Pact. The Pact is an important milestone in India's social and political history, and Tingre wants its legacy to reach future generations.

Tingre said the proposal speaks of safeguarding historical documents related to the Poona Pact. It also calls for giving momentum to the idea of a memorial and a museum dedicated to the historic event. The proposal further seeks to make the new generation aware of the circumstances of the agreement and its importance.

The Poona Pact is regarded as highly significant in Indian history, especially in the context of social equality, political representation and the rights of marginalised communities.

Tingre said preserving the history of the Poona Pact is necessary so that future generations can understand its historic importance and the ideas associated with it. He said the proposal also includes installing a full-length statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in recognition of his contribution to the country.

Tingre stressed that the ideals Dr Ambedkar spoke of, namely equality, liberty, fraternity and social justice, should reach every section of society. In his view, such an initiative will protect Pune's historic heritage and also raise awareness of the contributions and ideas of great social reformers.

Tingre said the committee's approval is an important step towards preserving the legacy of the Poona Pact and honouring Dr Ambedkar. If the general body approves the proposal, further administrative action will be taken.
