Residents say some offenders have reconnected seized pumps or fitted new ones, as the civic body plans squads to check water theft and wastage.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has seized 23 motor pumps in action against people drawing water illegally in Pimple Nilakh and Thergaon. The information is dated October 29, 2026. Residents allege, however, that some people have reconnected the seized pumps or started drawing water again by installing new ones.
To curb water theft and wastage, the civic body is preparing to deploy special squads. Each squad will have six members, including a junior engineer from the water supply department. The squads will conduct checks during the morning and evening supply hours. The date from which the squads will be deployed has not yet been announced.
Fitting a motor pump to a water connection can reduce pressure in the pipeline, which affects supply to other households. Residents are demanding surprise inspections and strict action against repeat offenders, including fines and disconnection of the water connection.
PCMC Executive Engineer Mahesh Baride said, "Five squads will be deployed in two separate shifts to stop wastage of water. If residents see water being wasted anywhere, or find someone doing so, they should file a complaint with the corporation. Action will be taken against those concerned."
Residents have also demanded that complaints be acted on within a fixed time. They say that seizing pumps alone will not stop illegal water drawing if offenders can install new equipment and resume.
The issue has come up at a time when housing societies in Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, Tathawade, Thergaon and Punawale are complaining of water shortage. A federation of housing societies has submitted to the civic body a list of 36 societies facing shortages. The federation has also demanded an inquiry to assess supply levels and distribution problems.
