Pune: Several surveys will have to be carried out to prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje International Airport at Purandar. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has begun the process of appointing a consultant for these surveys.

Deepak Kapoor, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of MADC, shared the information on X. He said work on the Purandar airport is progressing and the process of appointing a consultant has begun.

According to MADC, the consultant will not be limited to the surveys. The consultant will also help in studying technical and economic feasibility, and will handle the tender process until the tender for building the airport is issued.

The airport is planned across seven villages in Purandar taluka: Pargaon, Kumbharvalan, Vanpuri, Ekhatpur, Udachiwadi, Munjwadi and Khanwadi. Land acquisition is also under way.

MADC has already assessed the feasibility of the land in these villages. In the next phase, more surveys and technical studies will be held so that the final DPR can be prepared and the project can move towards implementation.

The proposed surveys include topographical, geotechnical, hydrological and cartographic assessments. These will show the height and shape of the land, the nature of the soil and rock, and how much weight the ground can bear. They will also map natural drains and flood risk, and detailed maps of the airport site will be prepared.

On the basis of these findings, key facilities such as the runway, terminal building, internal roads and drainage system will be planned. Planning of the rest of the airport's infrastructure will also depend on them.

MADC officials said the scope of the engineering studies and technical surveys will be spelt out in the tender documents. The surveys will be conducted after the consultant is appointed, and their results will be examined. The DPR will then be finalised, which will open the way for tenders for further planning and construction.
