A pre-dawn fire in the parking area of the four-storey Kunal Market building near Chafekar Chowk damaged 12 two-wheelers, two cars and a bicycle.
A fire swept through the parking area of the four-storey Kunal Market building, close to Chapekar Chowk in Chinchwad, Pimpri Chinchwad, in the early hours of Thursday, October 29, 2026. Fifteen vehicles were damaged: 12 two-wheelers, two cars and a bicycle. One man received minor burns and was taken to Talera Hospital for treatment.
Police said the blaze began at about 2.10 am, though Chinchwad police recorded the first information about it at around 1.59 am. The building falls under the Chinchwad police station limits. Fire engines arrived from the main fire station and from the Pradhikaran and Thergaon sub-fire stations, four in all, and the flames were put out fully with help from the police.
Firefighter Vivek Patil said his crew used a hose reel to bring the flames under control. He said the damage was largely confined to the vehicles standing in the parking area, and every burnt vehicle had been parked there.
Some residents were reported to be stranded on the upper floors while the fire burned. Firefighters led them out safely, which prevented what could have become a serious tragedy.
On the cause, police pointed first to a short circuit, but stressed that this is only a preliminary view and that the exact reason is still unknown. Investigators are also examining whether a fault in the electrical system of an electric vehicle was responsible.
Senior police officers came to the scene. They included Vikrant Deshmukh, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for traffic, along with the Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Economic Offences Wing and the senior inspector of Nigdi police station. Assistant Sub-Inspector Dhavan, the night-duty officer at Chinchwad police station, was there with his team. Personnel of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL), also called Mahavitaran, reached the site as well.
Onlookers collected near the market as the fire raged, and police asked them to disperse once it was out. The area is now calm and under control. Police said further legal action and investigation are under way. The details were shared by the senior police inspector of Chinchwad police station.
