The Food and Drug Administration destroyed 303 kg of barfi, worth about Rs 1.21 lakh, at a sweet shop in Dhanore village in Khed taluka and sent a kalakand sample to a lab.

Pune, November 3, 2026: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Pune, has taken action against a sweet shop in Dhanore village in Khed taluka of Pune district. Over concerns about the quality of the barfi and its improper storage, the FDA seized 303 kg of barfi and destroyed it. The barfi is valued at about Rs 1.21 lakh.

The action was taken on November 2, 2026, at a shop called R. Bikaner Mithai, located inside Mauli Complex in Dhanore on the Alandi-Markal Road. It was carried out under the "Surakshit Anna, Surakshit Maharashtra" campaign launched under the leadership of Maharashtra's Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe.

During the inspection, FDA officials found 303 kg of barfi at the shop, valued at about Rs 1,21,200. They also found an open sample of kalakand there.

According to the FDA, the barfi stock was suspected to be of substandard quality. Officials also found that the sweets were kept at room temperature, carried no labels, and that no purchase invoices were available for them.

Sweets are perishable. Keeping this in mind, the entire 303 kg of seized barfi was destroyed on the spot. The kalakand sample was collected and sent to a laboratory for testing and analysis.

The inspection was carried out by Food Safety Officer H. R. Marewar. He was guided during the inspection by Regional Assistant Commissioner S. N. Chatte and Joint Commissioner (Food) S. Karkale.

The FDA has appealed to food business operators to store food items properly, follow the required labelling rules, and keep purchase invoices and other necessary documents safely.
