Polling was recently held for the graduates' and teachers' constituencies of the Pune division, and all eyes are now on the counting. Voting for the Pune Teachers' Constituency took place on October 23. Counting will be held tomorrow, October 27, it has been announced. After the counting, it will become clear which candidate wins and who loses.
Both the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi have made this election a matter of prestige, and political circles are keen to know the outcome. Teachers' and graduates' constituencies are considered important for the Legislative Council. Both alliances had therefore made strong efforts to retain their influence.
Candidates of various political parties and independents were in the fray. A closely fought contest was seen among the BJP, the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), the Congress and independent candidates. The main candidates are Kaustubh Gawade (BJP), Sachin Sanap (Shiv Sena, Shinde faction), Jayant Asgaonkar (Congress) and Dattatray Sawant (independent). Teacher voters as well as political parties are watching how these candidates fare. Curiosity over whom the voters have preferred has grown.
A total of 61,940 voters were registered in the Teachers' Constituency. Voting took place on October 23 from 8 am to 4 pm. Turnout in this constituency was more than 82 per cent. Voters are also said to have taken part enthusiastically in the Pune Graduates' Constituency, where turnout was more than 62 per cent. Political parties are therefore watching the results of both constituencies.
Various predictions are being voiced in political circles on which way the teacher voters will go. However, the candidates' performance and the support the parties have received will become clear only once the actual result is declared. Special attention will be paid to the votes each candidate gets, the margin of victory and the performance of the main rivals. The result may also affect the political equations in the constituency.
In the previous election, Jayant Asgaonkar of the Congress had won. He defeated Dattatray Sawant and BJP-backed candidate Jitendra Pawar. According to available information, Asgaonkar had received a total of 25,985 votes and won by a margin of 10,626 votes. Political observers are therefore watching whether he will hold on to his performance this time.
Polling is over and the wait is now for the counting. After tomorrow's counting on October 27, it will be known whom the voters have backed. With both alliances having put in their full strength, the result has gained special importance, and curiosity over who will win in Pune is at its peak.
