A commuter at Vikhroli railway station in Mumbai pulled a man off the track moments before a local train passed; a video of the rescue is circulating online.
A scene that left onlookers shaken played out at Vikhroli railway station in Mumbai's suburbs at around 10 am. A young man was standing on the railway track with the intention of ending his life as a local train approached. Another passenger acted quickly and pulled him off the track, and the man narrowly escaped death.
According to preliminary information, the man was standing on the track on the CSMT-bound side, a short distance from Vikhroli station. He was on the track of platform number one, on the slow line for trains coming from the Karjat side. Passengers waiting at the station could see him clearly. He is said to have been in poor mental health and to have stood there to end his life under the local train.
The local was only a few metres away, and everyone felt he was about to be run over. At that moment, a passenger, with no thought for his own safety, ran towards the track and pulled the man aside. Seconds after he was moved away, the local passed through. Had he remained there, he would have been run over.
The matter did not end there. Even after being removed from the track, the man kept trying to end his life. The passenger held him with an arm around his neck. Once the man slipped free of his grip and tried again to go under the train, but the passenger deftly caught hold of him again. In the tussle, both fell to the ground. Even so, the passenger did not let go of him until the end and saved his life.
A video of the incident is going viral on social media. It shows the rescued man repeatedly trying to go back onto the track. The railway administration has begun an inquiry into the matter, and the railway police are also questioning those involved in the incident.
