The deceased has been identified as Farid Ahmed Shaikh. According to the accident report of BEST, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking, the incident took place at about 10.15 am. The Route 441/31 bus was travelling from Mazgaon depot towards Andheri at the time.

According to the bus driver's statement, a tempo loaded with chickens was parked on the left side of the road near PMG Colony. A worker was unloading chickens from the tempo for a nearby shop. The BEST bus was passing alongside when it suddenly opened the rear door of the tempo.

The door struck the left rear corner of the bus and swung back to hit the worker. He fell to the ground and was injured.

The driver had first driven on. He stopped the bus later, when passengers told him a man had been injured in an accident involving the bus. Other workers of the chicken shop also came to the spot and told the driver that the injured man had already been taken to hospital.

The driver called the police emergency number and reported the accident. Police reached the spot and took both the BEST bus and the tempo to MIDC police station for further questioning.

According to the accident report, the driver was later told that police would take further action if the injured man filed a complaint. The bus was asked to be kept at Mazgaon depot, while the driver and the conductor were allowed to leave.

At about 9.45 pm on Wednesday, police from MIDC police station called the driver and told him that the injured man had died. The driver was asked to come to the police station at 10 am on Thursday, October 22, for further investigation.

The accident officer on night duty also went to MIDC police station after the accident. The officer was asked to return the next morning.

On October 21, police registered an FIR at MIDC police station against the BEST bus driver under Sections 106(1), 281 and 125(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
