Police in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district have arrested a 19-year-old man. He is accused of stealing 15 tolas of gold jewellery from his own uncle's house and selling it to buy an expensive SUV. A police officer gave the information on Sunday.
According to the officer, the incident took place in Satave village of Panhala tehsil. The information was given by an officer of Kodoli police station. The accused is Samar Chavan. He lives near the house of his uncle, Umesh Chavan.
Police said Samar stole about 174.96 grams, or 15 tolas, of gold jewellery from his uncle's house. The jewellery was allegedly sold to a local jeweller for Rs 10 lakh. He bought a new SUV with the money.
Samar then called his uncle and invited him to perform the traditional puja of the new vehicle. The man from whose house the gold had gone was thus invited to the puja of the new vehicle.
The matter came to light when Umesh Chavan learnt that jewellery had been stolen from his house. He then filed a complaint with the police.
After receiving the complaint, Kodoli police investigated the case and arrested Samar Chavan. Police have also arrested the jeweller who bought the stolen gold. The jeweller has been named as Sangram More.
