IMD forecasts light rain in Mumbai, yellow alert for thunderstorms in several Maharashtra districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast light rain in Mumbai and surrounding areas. A yellow alert has also been issued for parts of Maharashtra.

In its weather bulletin, the department said thunderstorm, lightning, rain and gusty winds are possible in many parts of the state. The weather is expected to remain unsettled in Konkan, North Maharashtra, Marathwada, Western Maharashtra and Vidarbha.

According to the IMD, some districts could see thunderstorm with lightning, light to moderate rain and strong winds at isolated places. Wind speeds of 30-40 km per hour are expected in many districts, while gusts in parts of Vidarbha could reach 40-50 km per hour.

In Konkan, light rain is likely in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Thursday. Raigad and Ratnagiri could see thunderstorm with lightning, light to moderate rain and strong winds of 30-40 km per hour at isolated places, the department said. Light to moderate rain or thundery showers are also forecast for Sindhudurg.

The bulletin said light rain could continue in parts of Konkan on Friday, October 30. The weather is expected to stay dry for the next few days after that.

In North Maharashtra, Dhule and Nandurbar are forecast to have thunderstorm with lightning, light to moderate rain and strong winds of 30-40 km per hour at isolated places on Thursday. Similar conditions are reported for Nashik and the Nashik ghat areas. Jalgaon and Ahilyanagar could see light to moderate rain or thundery showers.

Rain or thundery showers are also forecast for Pune and the ghat areas around it. Kolhapur, the Kolhapur ghat areas and Satara could see light to moderate rain or showers, while thunderstorm with lightning and strong winds are possible at a few isolated places in the Satara ghat areas. Light rain or thundery showers are also likely in Sangli and Solapur.

Many districts of Vidarbha are forecast to see thunderstorm with lightning, light to moderate rain and strong winds of 40-50 km per hour at isolated places. These include Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Wardha and Yavatmal. In Gadchiroli, thunderstorm with lightning, heavy rain and strong winds of 40-50 km per hour are possible at isolated places. The bulletin carries no weather warning for Buldhana and Washim on Thursday.

Rain is also possible in parts of Marathwada. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar could see light to moderate rain or thundery showers, while thunderstorm with lightning and strong winds of 30-40 km per hour are forecast at isolated places in Jalna. Parbhani could see light rain or thundery showers, while light rain is possible in Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv.
