The bond between humans and nature runs deep, each shaping the other. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the fertile land that grows our food all come from nature. But in today's industrial age, humans have upset that balance on a massive scale for their own gain. Keeping this in mind, World Environmental Health Day is observed across the world every year on September 26, to highlight the link between human health and the environment and to stress the need for a clean environment.

The day was started by the International Federation of Environmental Health, known as IFEH. Its aim is to draw the world's attention to the harmful effects that a degraded environment has on human health. The lesson the day teaches is that human society can never be healthy unless nature itself is healthy.

Serious problems are emerging across the world today, including rising air pollution, contaminated water supply, the problem of plastic waste, rapid deforestation and changing weather patterns. These are not only damaging the beauty of nature but also having a direct and dangerous effect on the human body and health. Polluted air is fuelling a rise in respiratory illnesses, lung ailments and diseases such as cancer, while contaminated water is spreading stomach illnesses and epidemics. Microplastics from plastic waste are entering the human food chain, which is extremely dangerous for the body. If these environmental threats are not addressed today, humans could face major health crises in the future.

To improve the health of the environment and keep human life safe, clean energy and proper waste management are essential. Carbon emissions can be reduced by increasing the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. Beyond that, separating wet and dry waste in everyday life, completely stopping the use of single-use plastic and building a habit of recycling have now become necessities of the times. Ensuring clean and safe drinking water for all is also a key part of environmental health.

On the occasion of September 26, schools and colleges, social organisations and government bodies across the world jointly organise several awareness programmes. Schools and colleges hold workshops, discussion sessions, essay and speech competitions, as well as tree-planting drives. The day is a reminder that protecting the environment is not the responsibility of governments or institutions alone, but the duty of every citizen. Small changes in everyday habits can also make a big contribution to saving the environment. Habits such as planting trees, preventing the wastage of water and using public transport can lead us toward a healthier future.

World Environmental Health Day is not just a day for speeches or events, but a day to resolve to leave behind a safe, clean and green world for future generations. Respecting and protecting nature is the real guarantee of our own health and lives. Only if we all adopt a green lifestyle together can we build a society free of disease and a healthy environment.
