Habit, sound masking and learned association with sleep may explain why a sudden silence breaks some people's sleep, though the effect is not the same for everyone.

Many people who are used to the sound of a fan or cooler at night find their sleep broken when it suddenly stops. Interestingly, some cannot sleep in a completely silent room either, yet feel calm as soon as the steady hum of a fan begins. If this happens to you, there is no cause for worry; you are not alone. The brain's habits, the way it recognises sounds and mental cues linked to sleep could all be responsible.

The first factor is habit. The brain continuously registers the sounds around it and learns from experience which are important and which can be ignored. If you sleep every night with a fan or cooler running, the brain after some time pays less attention to that familiar sound. In psychology this process is called habituation. This is why the fan's sound does not feel disturbing and becomes an ordinary part of the sleeping environment.

The second factor is sound masking. The steady noise of a fan, cooler or air conditioner can soften the jolt of sudden sounds from outside. A dog barking or a vehicle's horn at night is felt instantly in a quiet room, but with a fan running the contrast with such sounds may be felt less. Technically, a fan's sound is not always white noise, but its uniform sound can create a good sleeping environment for some people.

The third factor is association with sleep. If a person gets used to sleeping to the same sound every night, the brain may link that sound with sleep. In psychology this is called classical conditioning. On hearing the fan, the brain may get a signal that it is time to sleep, and this may be why the sound brings a feeling of comfort when it starts. However, it cannot be said that the effect is the same in everyone.

As for why sleep is lost when the sound stops, the change in the surroundings when a fan is suddenly switched off can be picked up by the brain. When sleep is light, such a change can cause a person to wake. Even so, not everyone wakes when the fan stops. The stage of sleep, stress, room temperature and lifestyle also play a part.

Among the common questions on the subject is why some people cannot sleep without the sound of a fan. The answer is that sleeping to that sound every night can lead the brain to link it with sleep, and a continuous sound helps make outside disturbances feel less intrusive. Another question is whether a fan's sound is white noise. It can be continuous and uniform, but technically it is not always white noise, though for some people it helps create an environment conducive to sleep. A third is whether waking when a fan suddenly stops is normal. Some people may wake when the sound abruptly ends, but not everyone has that experience. Sleep stage, room temperature and personal habits can make a difference.
