WhatsApp is upgrading its Events feature so that invitations can be shared with people who do not have a WhatsApp account, the company said in a blog post.
Messaging platform WhatsApp is improving its Events feature. After the new update, users will be able to send event links even to people who do not have a WhatsApp account. The company announced this in a blog post.
The feature began in May 2024, when WhatsApp introduced the option to create events for Communities and send invitations to members. It was later brought to group chats as well, where other members could indicate whether they would attend. The company has now decided to take the feature further.
The company said in the blog post that several upgrades to the Events feature are being rolled out. The new features will be available to everyone in the next few weeks. The biggest change is that users will now be able to share event links with people who do not have a WhatsApp account. This is somewhat similar to WhatsApp's guest call functionality.
Users can create an event and add a cover photo to it. The event link can then be sent directly to others. The RSVP status will tell the user whether the person invited will attend. Invitees will not need to download the app or create a WhatsApp account to give their RSVP.
WhatsApp has also introduced a new "Events Home", which works like a centralised hub. The company describes it as a "one-stop" solution for users. Through it, they can prepare customised invitations to send to others.
Events Home also lets users manage RSVPs. They can set custom reminders and add a plus-one. Choosing the events option in WhatsApp's settings page will show details of both past and upcoming events. The list will include events the users created themselves as well as those to which they have been invited.
