As part of a state water conservation campaign, 83 students of a Washim school made sky lanterns carrying messages on saving water and soil.

Washim, November 6: Several awareness programmes on water conservation are under way in the district, organised by the Maharashtra government's Soil and Water Conservation Department under the guidance of Executive Engineer Harendra Waghmare. The water conservation campaign runs from August 21, 2026, to January 26, 2027. Its main aim is to raise awareness about protecting water sources, using water frugally, conserving soil and planning for rainwater properly.

Joining the campaign, Shri Bakliwal Vidyalaya and Higher Secondary School held a sky lantern competition on the theme "Water conservation measures today and saving water", on the initiative of NCC officer Amol Kale. A total of 83 students took part of their own accord, showing their skill as well as their sense of responsibility towards society and the environment.

The children made attractive sky lanterns from colourful paper. Through them, they presented effective messages on issues such as saving water, soil conservation, water conservation, rainwater harvesting, farm ponds, dams, watershed development, tree planting and protecting the environment. With slogans such as "Today's conservation, tomorrow's secure future" and "Save water, build the future", the students explained the importance of water and soil.

Officials of the Soil and Water Conservation Department visited and viewed the lanterns. They included water conservation officers Sanket Ingole and Ravi Bhalerao, auditor Milind Savdekar and senior clerk Atul Karmankar. They praised the students' artworks and spoke about the importance of water conservation, the proper use of water and protecting the environment.

The message was that everyone should make an effort so that rainwater soaks into the ground instead of running off, existing water sources are saved, tree planting is encouraged and soil erosion is stopped. Saving every drop of water is not only the responsibility of the government or the administration but the duty of every citizen. The students put forward this point through their artworks.

If children develop this understanding at a young age, it will certainly help prepare a generation of responsible citizens.

BaklIwal Charitable Trust president Surendrakumar Baklwal, headmaster Babanrao Billari, deputy headmaster Dambhiwal, supervisor Kishor Rathod and NCC officer Amol Kale congratulated and appreciated the students and NCC cadets.

With the message "Save every drop, avoid water scarcity; save soil, build the future!", the school's NCC cadets spread the word on water conservation through sky lanterns.
