Wadi police in Nagpur have acted against a suspected gang linked to attempted break-ins, house thefts and vehicle thefts in the Wadi area. Police have arrested one accused and are searching for his two alleged accomplices.

The arrested accused is Nilesh Bawane. His alleged accomplices, Vicky Dehariya and Rahim Sheikh, are absconding. Dehariya lives in Panchpaoli, while Sheikh lives in Yashodhara Nagar.

According to police, the investigation gathered pace after an attempted break-in at the Bank of India branch at Eighth Mile in the early hours of October 2. A shopkeeper near the bank told bank manager Nikhil Potdar that the bank's gate appeared to be open. When Potdar reached the spot, he found the lock of the bank's channel gate broken.

The bank's CCTV footage showed three men, their faces covered with cloth, trying to break the lock. They are said to have failed to carry out the theft. A case was then registered at Wadi police station.

The attempt came at a time when residents of Indrayani Nagar, Smriti Nagar, Trilok Nagar, Dhammakirti Nagar, Dattawadi and Eighth Mile were worried about suspicious movement at night and reports of thefts in nearby areas. Residents had demanded that police act against those responsible.

Taking the matter seriously, Wadi police stepped up patrolling and began a technical investigation to identify the suspects. To track the accused's movements and link the separate incidents, the investigating team went through CCTV footage from about 40 locations in Nagpur.

With the help of confidential information and the investigation team of Yashodhara Nagar police, three suspects were reportedly identified. Bawane was arrested after that.

During questioning, Bawane allegedly confessed that he had committed the offences in the Wadi area along with Dehariya and Sheikh, police said. The two alleged accomplices are being traced for questioning and further investigation.

Police suspect the gang may have been involved in several night-time offences, including house thefts and vehicle thefts. Investigators are examining the accused's role in these incidents and trying to establish whether the attempted bank break-in is connected to other crimes in the area.

The search for the two absconding suspects continues. Police hope their arrest will help confirm the accused's alleged confession, establish the full extent of the crimes and determine whether the gang was involved in further offences. Police have further increased surveillance and patrolling in the affected areas during the investigation.
