Police in Nagpur's Wadi police station area have busted an alleged gang involved in a bank theft attempt, night-time house burglaries and vehicle thefts. Police have arrested Nilesh Bawne in the case. His two alleged accomplices, Vicky Dehriya and Rahim Sheikh, are still at large and police are searching for them.

Police made the breakthrough after going through CCTV footage from about 40 locations and acting on confidential information.

According to police, the case dates to the early hours of October 2. An attempt was made to commit theft at the Bank of India branch at Aathva Meel by breaking the lock of its channel gate. In the morning, a shopkeeper near the bank told bank manager Nikhil Potdar that the gate was open. When the manager reached the spot, he found the channel gate's lock broken.

The bank's CCTV footage showed three youths with their faces covered with cloth trying to break the lock. A case was then registered at Wadi police station and an investigation began.

Meanwhile, residents of Indrayani Nagar, Smriti Nagar, Trilok Nagar, Dhammakirti Nagar, Dattawadi and the Aathva Meel area of Wadi were living in fear because of suspicious activity at night. Local residents had also demanded action from police.

Treating the matter as serious, police stepped up patrolling and began a technical investigation. During the probe, CCTV footage from about 40 locations across Nagpur city was examined. With confidential information and help from the Yashodhara Nagar police investigation team, three suspects were identified.

Police then arrested Nilesh Bawne. According to police, he confessed during questioning that he had committed the offences in the Wadi area along with his alleged accomplices Vicky Dehriya and Rahim Sheikh. Vicky Dehriya lives in Panchpaoli, while Rahim Sheikh is a resident of Yashodhara Nagar.

Police are now searching for the two absconding accused. Investigating the alleged role of the two in other theft cases will also be important.
