The war between Iran and the United States has continued for months, with neither side willing to back down. Both countries have suffered losses of material and lives, yet neither is ready to lay down arms for fear of appearing weak. Both sides have been trying to gain an advantage by offering each other deals.

Iran has stuck to its terms, while the United States had been watching Iran's latest proposal as a possible way to resolve the standoff. However, US President Donald Trump has rejected the proposal put forward by Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, against the backdrop of the US-Iran confrontation.

Trump said clearly that Iran's proposal is unacceptable. His stance emerged even as talks between the two countries were underway through mediators during the United Nations General Assembly.

Iran had proposed a ceasefire to the United States and offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's demand was that the United States reduce its military pressure and ease the economic blockade imposed on it. Iran also said that if agreement was reached on these terms, the movement of ships through Hormuz would resume within seven days.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, is considered crucial to global energy trade, since large volumes of oil and natural gas are shipped through this route. Disruption of movement along this route could affect energy markets and the economies of several countries. The United States is pressing for free and safe shipping through Hormuz, while Iran is demanding that the US reduce pressure on it in return.

After Iran's proposal was made public, Trump refused to accept it, which has again created differences in the talks between the United States and Iran. Iran has indicated readiness to find a diplomatic solution, but the US position is that its main demands must be met before it reduces pressure. As a result, the issue of fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the talks.
