The British government's budget papers retain the two-year Graduate visa for international students, limited to graduates of universities in the high-compliance category.

There is good news for young people dreaming of studying abroad. In its budget papers, the British government has kept the Graduate visa, or post-study work period, for international students at two years. This means students pursuing higher education in the UK will continue to have the chance to stay on after their studies and look for work.

There is a condition, however. Under the rules, the facility will be available only to graduates of universities that fall in the high-compliance category.

According to the official budget papers released by the UK government, it wants to promote a dynamic labour market and new kinds of business. To that end, it aims to build the most favourable migration system in Europe for highly skilled workers.

The new policy tightens immigration rules for low- and medium-skilled people. On the other hand, these opportunities have been improved to attract international talent. The government has also expanded the High Potential Individual visa. It now includes eligible graduates of institutions ranked in the world's top 150, and the cap has been raised accordingly.

The news matters to Indians because they make up the largest share of international students studying in the UK. For Indian students, gaining international work experience abroad along with a degree is a very important part of a career.

Owing to recent policy changes, British universities saw a sharp fall in enrolment of Indian students in September 2026. Indian families were quite worried. The decision to retain the two-year post-study work route has now restored confidence among families and students. Indian students can now stay on for two years after completing their studies and look for jobs.

Education experts say the new framework will completely change the way Indian students choose universities. The choice of university will now be based on outcomes. Earlier, students mostly enrolled by looking at a university's global ranking, but they will now have to pay more attention to the institution's track record, its placements and its industry links.

Experts also say the British government should soon clarify the yardstick by which it will measure high-compliance universities and strong employment outcomes. This transparency will help students make decisions about their careers and large financial investment, because preparation and decision-making for the September 2027 intake have already begun.
