Two youths held for six thefts in Butibori, stolen goods worth Rs 6.71 lakh recovered

Nagpur: Crime Branch Unit-1 has arrested two youths in connection with six thefts in the Butibori area. Police recovered stolen goods worth about Rs 6 lakh 71 thousand from the two accused. Both have been handed over to Butibori police for further investigation and legal action.

The arrested are Tanmay Ganvir, 23, and Harshal Chanekar. Tanmay lives at Bahadura Phata on Umred Road and does event-related work. Harshal is a resident of Bhivapur. He is studying for a BCom and lives in rented accommodation in Nagpur.

According to police, the accused committed the thefts out of a desire for expensive habits and a high-profile lifestyle. Police said Tanmay was addicted to MD drugs and online betting, while Harshal too was fond of a high-profile lifestyle. Both had girlfriends and liked travelling to different places. Their families were not financially able to meet such expenses and pastimes, so the two turned to theft to make easy money.

Police investigation found that the two got to know each other about two years ago. They then committed a theft together in the Hudkeshwar police station area. They did not get much from it, but escaping police capture emboldened them. They then began choosing the outer areas rather than the city for thefts.

Police said that to avoid the CCTV cameras installed across Nagpur city, the accused targeted the Butibori area, where they committed six thefts one after another. Even after so many offences, they stayed out of police reach.

Finally, Tanmay was caught by Crime Branch Unit-1 while riding a two-wheeler without a number plate in the Bajaj Nagar area. Police grew suspicious of him and questioned him, which revealed several thefts. Police said that during questioning Tanmay confessed to committing six thefts in Butibori with his associate Harshal. Police then arrested Harshal as well.

Police are now questioning both accused about other thefts and possible criminal activity.
