A 20-year-old died and his friend was injured when an unidentified vehicle hit their Activa scooter in front of the National Zoological Park in Nagpur on Thursday afternoon.

A 20-year-old youth was killed in a road accident in front of the National Zoological Park (Nagpur zoo) in Nagpur on Thursday afternoon. An unidentified vehicle hit his Activa scooter. His friend, who was riding pillion, was injured and is undergoing treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Yuvraj Rajendra Mohadikar (20). He lived at Line No. 12-B, Rajendra Nagar, KDK College Road, near Neelam Paan Shop, Nandanvan. Also on the scooter was Ashish Pyarelal Patel (22), a resident of Jaripatka.

According to the police, the accident took place on October 29 between 3.45 pm and 4 pm. The two friends were returning to Nagpur from Dahegaon after college, riding an Activa moped (MH-49-AV-8459). On the road in front of the National Zoo Park, in the Gittikhadan police station area, an unidentified vehicle hit their scooter head-on with great force. The vehicle is alleged to have been driven at high speed and negligently.

The impact left Yuvraj seriously injured, while Ashish suffered comparatively minor injuries. The unidentified driver is alleged to have neither stopped to help the injured youths nor informed anyone, and instead fled the spot.

Both the injured were rushed to Mayo Hospital, where doctors examined Yuvraj and declared him dead. Ashish is being treated at the hospital.

Mohanish Mahadevrao Mohadikar (28), a relative of the deceased and a resident of Rajendra Nagar, filed a complaint. On it, Gittikhadan police registered a case against the unidentified vehicle driver.

Sub-Inspector Rahul Rathod registered the case under Sections 281, 106(1) and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 134 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Police have begun a search to trace the absconding driver and identify the vehicle that caused the collision. Further investigation is under way.
