Two police constables arrested in Gadchiroli, 52 days after woman's suicide

Kurkheda police on Thursday arrested two police constables in connection with the suicide of a young woman in Gadchiroli district. The action came 52 days after the incident. Both are accused of driving the woman to suicide.

The accused are Shivkumar Chhotelal Karsayal and Ashwini Raut. Shivkumar, 28, is a resident of Temli village in Korchi tehsil. Ashwini, 26, is from Bodhda in Desaiganj tehsil. Both are constables in the police. According to police, the woman left a note before taking her life. Police investigated the case on the basis of this note and a complaint from the woman's mother.

The woman was from a village in the Kurkheda police station area. Last year she came to the district headquarters, Gadchiroli, with the dream of joining the police, and began preparing for recruitment. She lived in a rented room. During this time she got to know Shivkumar on Instagram.

Shivkumar was also preparing for police recruitment. The two kept meeting at the training ground, grew close and fell in love. They had also decided to marry. Shivkumar was later selected in the recruitment, but the woman was not. She went back to her village but stayed in a relationship with Shivkumar. She hoped she would be selected later and would also marry Shivkumar.

Meanwhile, Shivkumar got to know Ashwini Raut, a woman constable posted at Gadchiroli police station. After that he began to distance himself from the woman. He is reported to have refused to marry her, which left her depressed. Ashwini then called her and berated her in abusive language. The woman was left completely broken. After being betrayed by the man she loved, she hanged herself at her home on September 7.

In her complaint to police, the woman's mother set out the reasons for the suicide and demanded action against those responsible. On the basis of the complaint and the note, Kurkheda police examined the facts of the entire sequence of events. After 52 days, a case was registered against constable Shivkumar and woman constable Ashwini on charges of causing the woman's suicide, and both were arrested.
