An attempt to steal iron rods from the Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) Nagalon coal mine in Majri area of Chandrapur district came to light in the early hours of Monday. Alert security guards caught the car, but both men in it used the darkness to escape. According to police, about 200 iron rods, valued at Rs 35,000, were found in the car.

The Majri police station has registered a case against one accused and one unidentified accomplice.

According to the information available, Sachin Samba Lohkare (40), a resident of Kuchna Colony, Bhadravati, works as a security guard at WCL Nagalon. On Monday, October 19, he was on contract duty and was patrolling the Nagalon coal mine area with colleagues in an official car.

At about 3.30 am, they spotted a suspicious Maruti Suzuki Versa car (MH 31/CN 1153). It was moving from in front of the Chadda company in the Nagalon coal mine towards the Wani-Warora road. The team of guards was immediately alerted, chased the car and surrounded and stopped it within the Nagalon mine area.

On seeing the police vehicle and the guards, the driver and his companion abandoned the car and ran into the darkness. When the guards searched the car, they found it packed behind the driver's seat with about 200 iron rods of WCL mine, of various sizes and bent out of shape. Each rod weighs about 5 kg. The total weight comes to 1,000 kg, and the rods were valued at Rs 35,000.

A black Redmi mobile phone was also found near the driver's seat. The owner's photograph was on the screen, which led to the identification of Rakib Sagir Siddiqui (25), a resident of Majri Colliery.

The security guard brought the seized car, the rods in it, the accused's mobile phone and the rest of the goods to Majri police station and handed them over to the police. Majri police have booked Rakib Sagir Siddiqui and an unidentified accomplice under Sections 3(5) and 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police havildar Haridas Chopane is investigating the case further.
