Turkish police have carried out large-scale raids against the LGBTQ+ community and organisations working for their rights. Police simultaneously raided several cities across the country, taking activists, people linked to organisations and other suspects into custody.

The government says the action was taken to protect the family, children and public order. But the move has reignited a fierce debate in Turkey over LGBTQ+ rights and civil liberties.

Police carried out action at the offices of LGBTQ+ organisations, activists' homes and other locations in cities including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Aydin and Mersin. According to Turkey's Ministry of Justice, the investigation covers 162 suspects, 9 organisations and 13 businesses. Dozens of people were taken into custody in the action.

The Turkish government has named the entire operation "My Family Is Safe." According to the government, the action was taken to protect children, the family system and maintain public order. Officials have cited investigation into allegations including obscene material, drugs, prostitution and alleged impact on minors.

During the operation, some websites and social media accounts linked to LGBTQ+ organisations were also restricted. This means the action was not limited to individuals but also affected the functioning of organisations.

Activists took to the streets in Istanbul and Ankara against the police raids and arrests. Large numbers of people took part in protests held outside courts and at other locations. Police detained several people during these protests as well.

Organisations working for LGBTQ+ rights have questioned the government's action, saying it could affect the freedom of organisations to work and the rights of activists. The Turkish government, meanwhile, says the action is within the bounds of the law and was necessary to protect family and children.

Following the episode, the issue of LGBTQ+ community rights, freedom of expression and the functioning of civil society organisations in Turkey has once again come into international focus. A clearer picture on these allegations is expected as the investigation and court proceedings progress.
