As US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Washington, Tibet supporters staged a protest near the Capitol. The activists chose the day of the meeting between the two leaders to press their demands for human rights, religious freedom and greater media access in Tibet. Raising their voice against Chinese policies, the activists sought to draw the world's attention to the current situation in Tibet. Their main aim was to focus international attention on the region.

On the occasion of Xi Jinping's visit to the US, different groups opposed to Chinese policies came together to protest in Washington. Tibetan activists gathered near the Capitol and once again raised the issue of Tibet's freedom and rights. Some protesters carried Tibetan flags, while others held placards demanding freedom. The protest was not limited to Tibet alone, with activists raising issues related to Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Taiwan also taking part. Groups representing the concerns of citizens from different parts of China thus came together outside the Capitol at the same time.

Some human rights groups and Tibet support organisations have claimed that floods and landslides on the Tibet-Nepal border have limited the flow of accurate information about the situation there to the outside world. They said journalists were facing difficulties reaching the disaster-hit areas. The protesters demanded that independent journalists be given greater access to Tibet so that the true situation of people affected by the disaster could reach the world. They also said the extent of damage caused by the floods and landslides should be independently verified.

The floods have brought the issue of control over information in Tibet back into focus. The protesters said there should be transparent information about the exact death toll, missing people and the real state of relief work during the disaster. The groups also voiced suspicion that information about the disaster was being suppressed.

The activists who took part in the protest demanded greater political and religious freedom in Tibet. They took the position that more rights should be given to preserve Tibetan culture, language and identity. The Chinese government, on the other hand, has defended its policies on Tibet, saying they emphasise development and stability in the region. The positions of the protesters and the Chinese government on the Tibet issue remain completely opposed to each other.

Even as the Trump-Xi meeting was seen as significant from an economic and trade standpoint, the Tibet issue came up for discussion on the streets of Washington. The protest, held against the backdrop of the two leaders' meeting, once again drew international attention to China's Tibet policy.
