Three US news channels sue after Trump bars them from White House
CNN, MSNBC and POLITICO lost White House access after Trump accused them of false coverage, and have now moved court
A fresh controversy has broken out in the United States. President Donald Trump on September 18, 2026, banned three television news channels, CNN, MSNBC and POLITICO, from entering the White House. The very next day, September 19, 2026, the entry passes of all three channels were actually cancelled.
Announcing the ban, Trump said the channels ran false and misleading reports about him and defamed him, and that this was the reason for the ban. The banned channels, in their defence, said freedom of expression is the first and most important value of the US Constitution, and that Trump had struck at exactly that.
All three channels have filed a petition against Trump in a US court. Earlier, when Barack Obama was president, he had banned a journalist, but only from a single event. At the time, under pressure from the media and the public, Obama had to withdraw that ban.
This makes clear that it is not easy to fully rein in journalism in the United States. In contrast, opposition leaders in India have now begun discussing whether any journalist or media house here has the courage to ban political leaders or fight a case against them in court.
The American media keeps fighting, at least for American citizens, for the values and quality of journalism and for its own real voice. American people have, on several occasions, been seen clashing with the government when needed in defence of free journalism. Investigative journalism may not be mainstream in India, China and Pakistan, but in the United States it remains mainstream. However, political observers say that because of the growing dominance of the Israeli lobby in the United States, a pro-Israel lobby is active across sectors from capitalism to the media, and there is a continuing effort to work for a government aligned with that ideology. Even so, the American media has not yet come fully under government control.
Trump's nature keeps him constantly in the headlines, and he prefers journalists who ask questions he likes and people who agree with him. But all American TV news channels have now banned Trump entirely, and even Fox, Trump's favourite channel, took part in the ban, so Trump has now vanished completely from television. Ending the dispute quickly and restoring the earlier situation would hurt Trump's ego, so he will not lift the ban. This has only deepened Trump's difficulty and confusion.
This ban on Trump has been imposed only by television news channels. As a result, print media, private YouTube channels, photojournalists and radio continue to cover him. Amid this entire controversy, the White House has also started its own YouTube channel, but since its reach and viewership are not yet large, the American public is not paying much attention to it for now.
