Footpaths are meant for pedestrians. But during the evening rush, some motorcyclists deliberately ride onto the footpath, making it hard for people to walk. A video showing three young men teaching such riders a lesson is going viral on social media.
The video was posted on Instagram by a page named jaipur_raj221, which is why it is believed that the incident took place in Rajasthan. It shows three friends walking at ease on a footpath, chatting. The path ahead of them is completely clear.
Behind them, four to five bikers are stuck, unable to get past. Most people, frightened by a vehicle or at the sound of a horn, would step aside and make way. These young men did not. They made the bikers understand what a footpath is for: if you have come to the wrong place, you must be the ones to wait.
As a result, the bikers had to move slowly behind the three. Honking did not help. In the end they had to stay quietly behind. There was no quarrel and no abuse. The three simply asserted their right, calmly. The video is being praised on social media and comments are pouring in.
The comments are worth a look. One user wrote that what the friends did was top class. Another said they should walk even slower, so that the bikers learn their lesson. Many wrote that this should happen in every city, saying the problem is the same in Mumbai and Pune.
One comment said that at times there is simply no room to walk on the footpath. Sometimes vehicles are parked there, sometimes a shop's goods are laid out, and sometimes bikes are ridden along it. The same comment said riding on a footpath is an offence under the law and attracts a fine if caught, but the police are not everywhere and such riders take advantage of that. The courage shown by the young men, it said, is truly commendable. They showed that fighting is not necessary to claim one's right.
The friends did not hit anyone, abuse anyone or shout. They calmly showed the riders their mistake. Some comments also said they had followed the path of non-violence like Mahatma Gandhi.
