Water supply to several parts of Thane city will remain shut for a full 36 hours. The supply from MIDC to the Thane Municipal Corporation area will be stopped completely. The corporation has appealed to residents to use water carefully.

Rainfall has been lower this year, and the shadow of a water crisis hangs over Thane as it does over the rest of Maharashtra. The decision has been taken against this background. Residents of several important areas of Thane may face a severe shortage of water during festival days or working days.

The weak rainfall has been attributed to changes in weather and the effect of El Nino. The monsoon also withdrew before its due time. There is therefore every apprehension of a serious shortage of drinking water in the coming days. To deal with the possible crisis and to plan the future water stock properly, the state government and the administration have decided on a 10 per cent water cut. This technical shutdown is part of those measures.

Thane city receives its water from the Jambhul water purification centre of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). For essential maintenance and repair work at the centre and for planning the water cut, supply will remain completely shut for 36 continuous hours, from midnight on Thursday, October 22, to noon on Saturday, October 24.

During these 36 hours, not a drop of water will reach the following areas of the Thane Municipal Corporation. All areas of the Diva ward committee are included. In Mumbra, the entire area will be affected except some parts of ward numbers 26 and 31. Supply will also be shut in all areas under the Kalwa ward committee. In Wagle Estate, Roopadevi Pada, Kisan Nagar No. 2 and Nehru Nagar will be affected. In Manpada, the Kolshet Khalcha Gaon area will also get no water.

Supply will resume once the shutdown ends, but for the next one to two days water will reach the city at very low pressure. Filling the pipelines and restoring pressure is likely to take some time.

The Thane Municipal Corporation has therefore made a humble appeal to all citizens to store the water they need before the 36-hour shutdown begins. It has also asked them to cooperate with the administration by using water very sparingly.
