Metro Line 3 serving the Hinjewadi IT Park is about to open. To help commuters reach their offices or homes easily after leaving the Metro, the state government has approved a Rs 426 crore development plan. It is meant to provide last-mile connectivity for Metro passengers.
Under the plan, a network of 21 internal link roads, about 19.2 km in total length, will be built outside eight key Metro stations in the first phase. Hinjewadi, which has been stuck in traffic jams for years, is expected to get significant relief.
The project will be carried out jointly by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). Both bodies will bear the cost equally, on a 50:50 basis.
The target is to complete all the works by the end of December 2026, and directions have been given to speed up the actual work. The plan includes roads 12 to 30 metres wide. Vehicles are not the only consideration: to promote eco-friendly travel, footpaths for pedestrians and separate tracks for cyclists will also be built.
Purushottam Sangle, public relations officer of the PMRDA, said: "Strong last-mile connectivity is being created around the Metro Line 3 stations by building wide link roads, safe footpaths and separate cycle lanes. This joint initiative of the PMRDA and MIDC will help make travel in the Hinjewadi area faster, safer and more sustainable."
The work is spread across the area as follows. Five roads with a combined length of 4.9 km will be built at Shivaji Chowk, the largest part of the plan. The circular road at Megapolis Circle is 4.06 km long. Three roads totalling 3.7 km will be built at Quadron Circle, in the main IT park area.
Three roads totalling 1.9 km will come up around Hinjewadi station. Near Pal India station there are also three roads, 1.6 km in length. Near Dohler station, a 1.5 km road, 98 metres wide, will be built. The Wipro Technologies road is 1.1 km long and connects the IT company. The Infosys Phase 2 road is a 500-metre internal link.
