Taiwan issue resurfaces at Trump-Xi meeting, China sends clear message to US
Xi Jinping told Trump that the US should not back Taiwan's independence, as the two leaders' meeting also touched on trade and technology.
The issue of Taiwan came up once again during an important meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Talks between the US and China on trade, technology and international relations were underway when China made its position on Taiwan clear. Xi Jinping told Trump that the US should not take a stance in favour of Taiwan's independence.
Xi Jinping also made clear at the meeting that the Taiwan issue is linked to China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity. According to China's position, Taiwan is a part of China, and its eventual reunification is a major issue in Beijing's policy. This is why China wants the US to neither support Taiwan's independence nor take on responsibility for its security.
The US and China have differed over the Taiwan issue several times in the past as well. Taiwan runs its own government, electoral system and administration, but China continues to maintain its claim over it. This is why the Taiwan issue is considered one of the most sensitive subjects between the two superpowers.
After this meeting between Trump and Xi, all eyes are now on what the US's actual stance on Taiwan will be. The US does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but the two countries share strong informal ties. The US also supplies weapons to Taiwan for its defence and has continued to give importance to its security.
At the same time, the Trump administration is also in talks with China on trade and other important issues, which means the US faces the challenge of maintaining a balance on Taiwan. The raising of the Taiwan issue at this meeting has once again brought this sensitive matter into discussion in US-China relations.
Tension between the US and China over Taiwan's future has persisted for years. China has opposed any formal declaration of independence by Taiwan, while opinion within Taiwan on relations with China is divided, and its administration takes its own decisions independently.
Alongside economic and trade issues, the question of Taiwan also emerged as significant in the Trump-Xi meeting. The world will be watching closely how the two countries' positions on this issue develop in the time ahead. The Taiwan issue is not limited to China and Taiwan alone, but also forms a major part of US policy in the Asia-Pacific.
