Many people experience sudden talking, muttering or mumbling in their sleep. Some only make sounds that do not make sense, while others speak entire sentences. This condition is called somniloquy. In most cases it is not a symptom of any illness and is considered normal for many people. But if sleep talking happens repeatedly or occurs along with certain other symptoms, it could be linked to another sleep-related problem.

There is no single reason given for why people talk in their sleep. It can happen during different stages of sleep. In some people, the habit can increase due to stress and anxiety. Mental fatigue and not getting enough sleep can also be causes. In some cases, factors such as fever, sleep deprivation or general stress can lead to the habit of talking in sleep. It has generally been observed that children grow out of this habit as they get older.

Is this habit caused by dreams? The direct answer is that there can be a connection between sleep talking and dreaming, but this is not always true. What a person says in their sleep is not necessarily a reflection of their dream or their real thoughts. So it would be wrong to form an opinion about a person's feelings or thoughts based on what they say while sleeping.

If the habit of sleep talking occurs only occasionally and does not disturb your sleep or cause any other trouble, there is generally nothing to worry about. But if the problem has started suddenly, has increased, or is accompanied by symptoms such as shouting, violent movement of the hands and legs, waking up suddenly in between, difficulty breathing, or excessive sleepiness during the day, it is advisable to consult a doctor.

On what should be done for good sleep, it is advised to keep a consistent sleeping and waking time. One should avoid excessive caffeine at night and reduce the use of mobile phones or laptops before sleeping. To reduce stress, relaxation techniques or calming habits can be included in daily life.
