India captain Shreyas Iyer struck a century as India beat the West Indies by eight wickets in the first match of the five-match T20 series, played at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on October 6.
Iyer's explosive innings left the West Indies bowlers helpless. With it, he broke a record held by Virat Kohli and became the first Indian captain to achieve the feat.
Batting first, the West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. Shai Hope made a fine 52 off 37 balls, and Sherfane Rutherford scored 56 off 34 balls. Naman Dhir took the most wickets for India, three. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav took two each.
India did not start well in the chase, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma dismissed cheaply. Iyer, however, stayed at the crease and kept playing big shots. He scored an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls, including 10 fours and 6 sixes.
Ishan Kishan contributed 37 off 27 balls. Powered by Iyer's century and Kishan's innings, India reached the target in just 14.4 overs, winning by eight wickets.
This is Iyer's first century in T20 internationals. He is the first Indian captain to score a century in the format while chasing. Until now, the highest score by an Indian captain in a T20I chase was Kohli's 94 off 50 balls against the West Indies in 2019. Iyer has now gone past Kohli.
Iyer is also the third Indian captain to score a T20I century. Rohit Sharma scored three centuries as captain, while Suryakumar Yadav hit one as captain against South Africa in December 2023.
