India lost the third match of the three-match ODI series against the West Indies but still won the series 2-1. Indian captain Shubman Gill was in superb form through the series and set a record that no Indian captain had held before him.

Gill hit a brilliant century in the first ODI. In the second match he made history with the fastest double century. In the third ODI he was out for just 1, but he still finished the series with the most runs to his name.

In three innings, Gill scored 334 runs with the help of a century and a double century, at a batting average of 167. With this performance he broke the 15-year-old world record of Zimbabwe's Brendan Taylor, who scored 310 runs in a three-match series against New Zealand in 2011.

Gill is now the highest run-scorer as captain in a three-match ODI series. He moved past Taylor, Babar Azam and Shai Hope to take top spot on the list. He is the second captain in the world to score 300 or more runs in a three-match ODI series.

Among Indian captains, the record previously belonged to Virat Kohli, who scored 263 runs in a three-match series against New Zealand in 2017. Gill has now taken it with his 334 runs.

The list of most runs by a captain in a three-match ODI series reads: Shubman Gill (India) 334 against the West Indies in 2026; Brendan Taylor (Zimbabwe) 310 against New Zealand in 2011; Shai Hope (West Indies) 278 against India in 2026; Babar Azam (Pakistan) 276 against Australia in 2021; and Krram Khan (UAE) 270 against Afghanistan in 2014.

Gill was named Player of the Series for this performance. It is the seventh Player of the Series award of his ODI career. With it he equalled Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and M.S. Dhoni for the most series awards won by an Indian in ODIs. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli are now ahead of him.
