India won three major international awards at the WF50 Sports Awards 2026, held in London on October 17 and 18. Leading players, coaches and well-known figures from the world of sport from across the globe were present as Indian sporting figures were honoured.

The event was organised to mark the 50th year, or golden jubilee, of the World Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslim Communities (KSIIMC). Held on the organisation's 50th anniversary, the WF50 Heritage Weekend celebrated sporting talent from around the world. Leading players and organisations were honoured across 12 sports categories.

Shabbir Ali Habib Virji, a former captain regarded as one of the most respected figures in Indian football, was honoured in two categories. The awards recognised his long contribution to giving Indian football a new direction, developing players and raising the standard of the game through his guidance.

An Arjuna Award winner, Shabbir Ali has served Indian football on and off the field for several decades. Many young footballers who developed under his guidance have represented the country at the international level. The two awards he received on the global stage in London are proof of his hard work and deep love for football.

Snooker veteran Yasin Merchant was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony. The well-known player, who has brought glory to India in cue sports, performed consistently at the snooker and billiards table for several decades and gave India many memorable moments at the international level.

Merchant's career has inspired several generations of young Indians to take up a career in a sport like snooker. In view of his distinguished career and dedication to the game, the World Sports Council gave him this highest honour. While receiving the award, he thanked the entire sporting community and his admirers.

India's role at the event was not limited to receiving awards. An Indian voice was also heard in the main judging process. Shuja Ali, a well-known figure in sport and the media, held an important position on the competition's five-member International Jury.

On the jury, Shuja Ali represented not only India but the entire continent of Asia. He played an important part in assessing, fairly, transparently and in depth, hundreds of sports nominations from different countries. This again showed the growing trust in, and influence of, Indian sports experts in international evaluation.
