The trauma care centre at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur will get new, modern equipment. The state government has given administrative approval of Rs 79.15 lakh for this. The money is planned to be used to buy a portable X-ray machine, an ultrasound and colour Doppler system, an AED and operation theatre equipment.

The aim is to ensure patients in road accidents and other serious emergencies get treatment in time. This is why it was decided to equip the trauma care centre with new machines. The government has cleared the purchase of equipment worth Rs 79.15 lakh.

It had been decided to provide the funds under the National Programme for Prevention and Management of Trauma and Burn Injuries. The process linked to the purchase of the equipment is now being taken forward. The machines will then be bought through a tender process.

The plan covers seven categories of equipment, with an estimated total cost of Rs 79.15 lakh. These include one portable automated external defibrillator (AED), one portable X-ray machine and one portable ultrasound and colour Doppler system.

A portable X-ray machine can help carry out tests beside the patient as required. In some cases, this may reduce the need to move a critically ill patient elsewhere for tests. The ultrasound and colour Doppler system will be used for tests of internal organs and blood flow. An AED is used for emergency treatment in certain life-threatening irregular heartbeats.

To improve operation theatre facilities, three modern OT tables, three OT lights and three electrocautery machines will also be bought. The new OT tables will make it easier to position the patient as needed during surgery. Modern OT lights will give better illumination at the surgical site. Electrocautery machines are used in surgery to cut tissue and control bleeding.

With administrative approval in place, the next stage is to complete the procurement process. The facilities can be used at the trauma centre only after the tender, supply and installation of the equipment are completed. The new facilities are expected to strengthen the examination of critically injured patients, the assessment of their condition and arrangements for surgery.
