A water shortage could arise in the coming days. To deal with it and to ensure people of the taluka continue to get adequate drinking water, a meeting to plan for and review the water scarcity situation was held at the Motala tehsil office on Wednesday. MLA Sanjay Gaikwad chaired the meeting, which discussed various measures to tackle the shortage in detail.

The meeting was called in line with the Maharashtra government's notices of September 25 and October 5. It was attended by the sub-divisional officer, Motala tehsildar Sarita Patil, heads and staff of various departments, sarpanches, administrators and local public representatives.

A full assessment was made of the water stocks in the taluka's major dams, including Nalganga, Paldhag, Rahera and Kapuswadi, as well as in the other small and medium projects. Given these stocks, officials were directed to plan the reservation and distribution of water so that people get drinking water through the coming summer and the next eleven months, up to October 2027.

The emphasis was on first fixing the reservation of the available water for drinking. Repair of the main pipelines that carry water, a ban on drawing water without permission, and keeping distribution balanced were also discussed. The officials concerned were told to prepare a list of villages likely to face a shortage, obtain approval for tanker water supply if needed, acquire wells, and complete repairs of defunct tap water supply schemes on time.

The meeting also decided to keep a taluka-level water scarcity redressal and monitoring committee in place, in line with the provisions of the government resolution. Officials of the revenue, rural water supply and irrigation departments, Mahavitaran and the panchayat samiti were asked to work in coordination and complete work to remove the shortage without delay.

Gaikwad, who chaired the meeting, directed the departments concerned to implement the necessary measures against the shortage immediately. He said clearly that work should be done in a planned manner as per the government's decisions of September 25 and October 5, and that care should be taken that no citizen of the taluka feels the pinch of a water shortage. The meeting stressed that the administration should be ready from now, plan the available water carefully and resolve water supply problems on time.
