Redness, swelling and pain on the skin are common complaints, most often caused by irritation, allergy or inflammation. But if the same symptoms appear suddenly, worsen or begin spreading fast, they may be a sign of a skin infection. They should not be ignored, and early treatment can keep an infection from becoming serious. Dr Saurabh Shah, consultant dermatologist at Saifee Hospital, Mumbai, explained the warning signs.

Cellulitis is one of the common skin infections. It affects the skin and the soft tissue beneath it. The affected area turns warm, swells and hurts when touched, and the redness may slowly increase. Fever, chills and shivering sometimes accompany it. Anyone with symptoms of cellulitis should see a doctor immediately. Left untreated, the infection can reach deeper tissues and, in some cases, enter the bloodstream.

A second, more serious type is necrotising soft tissue infection. It is rare but can be fatal. It spreads quickly and damages body tissue. Recognising its symptoms is important. Possible signs include rapidly increasing swelling and pain, blisters or boils on the skin, loss of sensation in a part of the skin, and skin turning purple, dark or black. Often the pain is far greater than the visible change on the skin. Anyone with such symptoms should go to a hospital's emergency department at once. Without timely treatment, the infection can threaten life.

Some people are at higher risk of skin infection. People with diabetes, those with weakened immunity and those whose wounds are healing after surgery may be more likely to get infected. Repeated or improper use of antibiotics can also make some infections harder to treat. This does not mean every such person will get an infection. However, bacteria can enter the body through cuts, scratches or any open wound on the skin, so it is essential to keep wounds clean and properly covered.

Not every red or painful patch of skin is caused by infection. Allergic reactions, contact dermatitis (skin inflammation caused by contact) and other skin irritation problems can show similar symptoms. But these may need different treatment, so trying to diagnose oneself can delay the right care.

A timely consultation with a dermatologist can establish whether skin changes are due to infection or something else. If redness is spreading fast, pain is severe or feels unbearable compared with what is visible on the skin, and there is also fever, boils, loss of sensation or darkening of the skin, do not ignore them. These can be signs of serious danger and medical help must be sought immediately. If symptoms intensify within a few hours in particular, delay should be avoided.

Early recognition and the right treatment can prevent serious complications. Some minor skin problems can heal by themselves with proper care, but it is important to understand when redness, swelling and pain point to a serious problem. Getting medical help in time can, in some cases, save a patient's life.
