Dry and cracked lips are very common when the weather changes. Often, lips stay dry and look rough even after a good lip balm is applied. Despite applying lip balm all day, the dry flakes on the lips do not go away. For this reason, the lips of many people start bleeding, and sometimes the area feels painful.

Popular dermatologist Gurveen Waraich Garekar has shared a video on her Instagram account on the subject. In the video, she has suggested some home remedies to relieve dry lips. The tips are given here.

The first concerns lip balm. According to experts, it is not advisable to apply lip balm directly on dry lips. A moisturiser should be applied first, followed by the lip balm. A light, fragrance-free moisturiser has been recommended for this.

The second concerns the habit of licking the lips. When lips feel dry, many people run their tongue over them. According to experts, touching the lips with the tongue can worsen the dryness. The tongue carries saliva from the mouth, which affects the delicate skin of the lips. Frequent licking of the lips should therefore be avoided, she said.

The third concerns matte lipstick. According to skin experts, applying matte lipstick in large quantities or every day can aggravate dryness of the lips. To get relief from dry lips, it has been advised to stay away from matte lipstick for a few days. A glossy or moisturising lipstick can be used instead.

The last remedy is for bedtime. According to the skin expert, a good amount of moisturiser should be applied on the lips before sleeping, with a little petroleum jelly on top. According to the expert, petroleum jelly forms a thin layer on the lips, which keeps them moist through the night and stops them from drying. This helps keep the lips soft.

In all, four points emerge from Garekar's video: moisturiser before lip balm, not licking the lips repeatedly, cutting down on matte lipstick, and moisturiser with petroleum jelly at night.
