Basic pay for the post is Rs 29,200 a month, and the last date for online applications is November 6, 2026.

Working in Indian Railways is a dream for lakhs of young people. Several railway posts are open to graduates, and one of them is Goods Train Manager, commonly called Train Manager. Employees in this post are responsible for the safe operation of goods trains and for the railway procedures required during the journey.

The post falls under Pay Level 5 of the 7th Pay Commission, with a starting basic salary of Rs 29,200 a month. Employees also get dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other benefits as per rules. A notable feature of the post is the running allowance, which is paid on the basis of kilometres covered. Since a Train Manager's duty is tied to running trains, this allowance is added to the salary according to duty and the prescribed rules. With all allowances included, the total salary is considerably higher than the basic pay. However, the take-home salary can vary from employee to employee depending on posting, duty, allowances and deductions.

Recruitment to the post is through the NTPC graduate recruitment of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). The first stage is the computer-based test CBT-1, with questions on general awareness, mathematics, and general intelligence and reasoning. Candidates who clear it must take CBT-2. Candidates are then called for document verification and a medical test on the basis of merit and the prescribed norms.

No separate typing test or computer-based aptitude test has been prescribed for Goods Train Manager. The post does require the A-2 medical standard, which means meeting the set norms for eyesight and other health checks.

Applicants need a graduation degree from any recognised university. Graduates in any subject can apply if they meet the age limit and other conditions. Under the RRB NTPC graduate recruitment under way in November 2026, 2,750 Goods Train Manager posts have been announced. The last date for online applications is November 6, 2026. Candidates should check the age limit, medical standards, reservation and other conditions in the official notification of the concerned RRB before applying.
