The Union Public Service Commission will announce the Civil Services Mains 2026 result shortly, for 933 posts, with new rules on serving officers sitting the exam again.

The result of the UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination 2026 is expected to be declared soon. Candidates will be able to check it on the Union Public Service Commission's official website, upsc.gov.in.

The Mains for the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 was held on August 21, 22, 23, 29 and 30, 2026. Candidates who clear the Mains will be called for the interview. The final merit list is prepared on the basis of marks in both the Mains and the interview. A total of 933 posts, including those in the IAS and IPS, will be filled through CSE 2026.

The posts are distributed as follows: 397 for the Unreserved (UR) category, 243 for Other Backward Classes (OBC), 133 for Scheduled Castes (SC), 88 for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and 72 for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

To download the name-wise PDF of the result, candidates should first go to the UPSC's official portal, upsc.gov.in, and then to the results section. They should check the "What's New" section on the homepage or click "Examinations Written Results", then select the relevant notice, the link titled "Civil Services (Main) Examination Result 2026 (Name-wise list PDF)", and download the file. On a computer, they can press Ctrl + F, or use the "Find in page" option on a mobile or tablet, and type their name or roll number to see their status.

Officers will be selected through this examination for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), the Indian Police Service (IPS) and other All India Services.

Several new rules have been laid down for CSE 2026. They cover candidates who have already cleared the UPSC CSE and joined service and wish to sit the exam again. Under the new rules, the route to repeatedly taking the exam while in service has been closed.

Under these rules, no candidate currently serving in the IAS or IFS will be eligible to sit CSE 2026. If a candidate is appointed to the IAS or IFS after the Preliminary examination, he or she cannot appear in the Mains even if the Preliminary is cleared. If the appointment comes after the Mains has begun but before the result, the candidate will not be considered for any service or post on the basis of the CSE 2026 result.

A chance to improve rank has been provided for those in the IPS or Central Group "A" services. Candidates who join the IPS or any Central Group "A" service through CSE 2026 can sit CSE 2027 if they meet the eligibility conditions. For this, they must take a one-time exemption from attending the training for the service they have been given. A candidate can avail of this exemption only once. A candidate who does attend the training will have to do the Foundation Course. A candidate who neither attends the training nor takes the exemption will have the CSE 2026 service allocation cancelled.

If the candidate is selected again in CSE 2027, he or she must choose one of the services obtained in 2026 or 2027. Failing to choose will result in cancellation of the service. The candidate's seniority will be determined by the service finally joined, and will not be reduced. After using this "One Time Opportunity", the candidate cannot sit CSE 2028 or later examinations unless he or she resigns from the job.

Candidates who have been allotted a service on the basis of the Civil Services Examination 2025 or any earlier examination, and who wish to use their remaining attempts, will be given one chance to sit the Civil Services Examination 2026 or 2027, whichever they choose. This chance will be subject to meeting the other eligibility conditions, and they will not have to resign from service for it. Candidates in this category who wish to sit the Civil Services Examination 2028 or later examinations will have to resign from the service post they previously obtained.
