Newborn dies during delivery at KDMC hospital, RMO doctor removed
After a newborn died during delivery at Kalyan-Dombivli civic hospital Shaktidham, KDMC removed the on-duty RMO and made MBBS doctors mandatory in maternity wards.
A newborn died during delivery at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation's Shaktidham Hospital. Taking serious note of the incident, the KDMC administration has decided to take action. The RMO doctor who was on duty at the hospital that day has been removed from work with immediate effect. In addition, the administration has now made it mandatory to have an MBBS doctor present in the maternity department of all civic hospitals, so that such incidents are not repeated.
The incident has once again raised questions about the availability of doctors at the hospital and how medical coordination is maintained. KDMC's health department began an inquiry into the matter soon after the incident. The baby's family had alleged that there was a delay in treatment during the delivery, which made the matter more serious.
It has come to light that the administration took action against Dr. Nikhat, who was working as the RMO at Shaktidham Hospital on the day of the incident. According to information related to the case, the administration's objection was that the gynaecologist present at the hospital was expected to provide necessary information about the condition of the mother and baby and to maintain medical coordination. Exactly at what level the medical error occurred will become clear only from the findings of the inquiry. So it has not yet been finally concluded that the baby's death was caused solely by negligence on the part of doctors; at present this is only in reference to the action taken by the administration.
KDMC has also taken financial action against the contractor company that supplies doctors to Shaktidham Hospital. Twenty five percent of the amount will be deducted from the company's bill for the current month, payable by the civic body. Along with this, it has been made compulsory to have an MBBS doctor in the maternity department of all KDMC hospitals, so that adequate medical manpower is present at the time of delivery and urgent decisions can be taken if needed.
The incident at Shaktidham Hospital has once again brought to the fore issues of doctor availability, medical coordination and responsibility for patient care in KDMC's health system. Various incidents related to medical services at KDMC hospitals have come to light in the past as well. In August 2026, following complaints about patient care, KDMC had carried out internal transfers of nine doctors, indicating that there were already some shortcomings in the hospital system.
Following the administration's action in this case of a newborn's death, attention is now on what the final findings of the inquiry are and what further action follows.
