The death of an infant delivered by caesarean section at Yash Hospital in Dighori, Nagpur, has led to angry scenes at the facility and a police investigation. The baby's family blames the doctors for negligence and wants the hospital sealed.
The mother, a resident of Tajabad, was admitted to the hospital at about 11.30 pm on Saturday. Her relatives say the caesarean operation was carried out at around 8 am on Sunday.
Once the baby was delivered, it showed no movement, the family says. The infant was examined and then declared dead. The news left the family in shock, and the relatives soon turned on the hospital administration.
Angry relatives staged a protest on the hospital premises, accusing the doctors of failing in their treatment of the mother and child. They demanded strict action against those they hold responsible. They also pressed, and later repeated, their demand that the hospital be sealed at least until the investigation is over.
The mood at the hospital turned tense, and police personnel were posted there to keep order and make sure the matter did not get out of hand.
The newborn's body has been subjected to a postmortem examination, and investigators are now waiting for the report to learn what caused the death.
Sakkardara police have registered a case of accidental death and begun their inquiry. Officers said that once the postmortem report comes in, the findings of the investigation will be forwarded to the Medical Council for closer examination. Any further action, they said, will rest on the facts the inquiry brings out.
For now, how the baby died remains unclear. The family's charge of medical negligence has not been established, and it is yet to be confirmed by the investigation. The postmortem report and the medical inquiry that follows are expected to show the cause of death and whether there was any lapse in the treatment or the delivery. The incident has raised questions over the conditions in which the delivery took place, but the final word will depend on the medical report and the official findings.
