Eight accused robbed a wine shop operator of goods worth Rs 3 lakh in Nagpur's Gokulpeth area as he was returning home after closing his shop. The incident caused alarm in the police department. Teams from Ambazari police station and the crime branch immediately began investigating. After scanning CCTV footage from more than 100 locations nearby, police got a lead on the accused.
Police have arrested a total of eight accused in the case, including two minors. Those arrested include Parvez Pyare Khan and Dhananjay Tarachand Awte, residents of Ekta Colony, Yadavnagar; Awez Khan Latif Khan; Mohammed Nadeem Mohammed Iqbal; Mohammed Roman Mohammed Irfan Shaikh; and Mohammed Bilal Khwaja Pasha, a resident of Seminary Hills. The identities of the two minor accused have not been made public.
DCP Crime Deepak Agrawal said that Sagar Johri, operator of Johri Wine Shop at Coffee House Chowk, was heading home in his car (registration MH-31-EU-4009) after closing the shop at 11 pm on Thursday. On Gokulpeth Canal Road, a red car overtook his vehicle and blocked his path. Two accused got out; one smashed the rear seat window while the other grappled with Sagar. Sagar managed to move away from his car.
Meanwhile, the remaining accused arrived on two-wheelers and began kicking the car. One of the accused pulled out a knife and threatened Sagar. All the accused then fled after snatching a bag from the back seat containing Rs 2.35 lakh in cash and a laptop, together worth Rs 3 lakh. DCP Agrawal said the complainant had initially reported Rs 4 lakh in cash, but the investigation later found the amount to be Rs 3.05 lakh.
Four separate crime branch teams were formed to catch the accused, and they scanned footage from more than 100 CCTV cameras installed within a 15-kilometre radius of Gokulpeth and surrounding areas. The accused were identified with the help of AI technology. The investigation also found that a boy named Aniket, who worked at Johri Wine Shop, was a friend of accused Bilal and often discussed the shop's business and the cash kept there with him. Police detained all the accused within 24 hours and recovered the entire looted goods.
