With a month left, the district administration and PWD are racing to finish work on key buildings, even as a contractors' payment issue persists.
Preparations are gathering pace in Nagpur, the winter capital, for the Winter Session of the Maharashtra legislature, which begins on December 7. With the graduates' constituency election process over, the district administration is now fully devoted to this work.
The legislature secretariat will begin functioning from Nagpur on November 28. Officials and employees of the Mantralaya will start arriving in the city two to three days earlier. The administration therefore has very little time left to complete the preparations.
Essential work at Vidhan Bhavan, Hyderabad House, Ravi Bhavan and other important buildings must be completed and handed over to the legislature administration by November 24-25. The local administration has about a month left, and finishing all the preparations in that time has become a major challenge.
Painting, furniture repair and maintenance work is due at buildings such as Ravi Bhavan, Nag Bhavan and Vidhayak Niwas. Officials face the challenge of getting all of this done within the set deadline.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has started work related to the session on a war footing. However, the issue of payments to contractors remains a challenge amid the preparations.
Bills for work done during the last Winter Session were pending. For this reason, contractors had initially considered deciding to boycott the work. Now that funds are available, contractors are taking part in the tender process.
Contractors have demanded that work orders be issued as soon as the tender process is complete, so that work can begin and finish on time. Administrative officials, for their part, have claimed that all preparations for the session will be completed before November 25.
