Nagpur: Drug traffickers will now be sent to jail under PIT-NDPS, along the lines of the MPDA. Sumit alias Namo Meshram, a notorious criminal of Lakadganj who lives in Sweeper Colony, Gangabai Ghat, is the first offender in this series. He has been sent to Yerawada jail in Pune for one year under PIT-NDPS.
Police are taking strict steps to curb drug trafficking. MPDA action is taken against offenders involved in serious crimes such as murder, assault, robbery and dacoity. To stop drug trafficking, directions have been given to act against traffickers too under PIT-NDPS, on the lines of the MPDA.
Earlier, this power rested with the government. Recently, the head of the police in a district or city has been given the authority to act. The first action in this series has been taken against Namo Meshram, against whom 17 cases are registered.
A list has been prepared of 29 offenders in the city who come under the ambit of PIT-NDPS action. Action against them is expected soon. With the local police chief now holding this power, action will speed up.
