The Nagpur Crime Branch Unit-2 has arrested Clement alias Rohit Eugene Pillay and solved five cases of theft, robbery and assault. According to police, the accused targeted his acquaintances and relatives. He is accused of robbing elderly women after holding them captive, and of stealing gold and silver jewellery worth about Rs 30 lakh from Paras Jewellers in Sadar.
To trace the accused, police went through footage from 75 to 80 CCTV cameras near the crime scenes and likely routes. The footage showed him walking to the railway station and boarding a train to Wardha. After keeping watch on his movements, the Crime Branch arrested him as soon as he returned to Nagpur. Questioning brought out two cases of robbery, two of burglary and one of assault.
In Sadar's Gadigodam area, the accused allegedly held 82-year-old Hilda Alexander Anthony captive in her house and struck her on the head with a wooden stick. He fled without robbing her after hearing people approach.
On the night of October 8, in the Ahbab Colony area of Gittikhadan, he entered the house of an acquaintance, Raja Sharif, held Sharif's 82-year-old mother captive, beat her and robbed her of gold bangles and a chain. Police sources said Raja Sharif had earlier helped a woman who was the victim in a rape case in which the accused, Clement, was also an accused. Police are linking this incident to an old enmity.
According to police, on August 9 the accused stole gold and silver jewellery worth about Rs 30 lakh from Paras Jewellers in Karachi Gali, Sadar. He already knew the shop owner, Pankaj Golchha, and visited the shop as a regular customer. Identifying him with the help of CCTV footage gave police a lead.
During questioning, the accused also admitted to a theft at his uncle's house in the Mankapur area. With this, two cases in the Sadar area, two in the Gittikhadan area and one in the Mankapur area have been solved. Police said the accused is a drug addict and spent the money from the thefts and robberies on staying in hotels and on leisure. Police suspect that further investigation may bring to light other offences and victims.
