Nagpur Crime Branch busts alleged 'foreign groom' matrimonial fraud gang, six held in Vardhaman Nagar
Police say the gang posed as foreign nationals on a matrimonial site to target women; six suspects were arrested from a rented bungalow.
The Nagpur Crime Branch has busted an alleged gang accused of targeting women through a matrimonial website. According to police, members of the gang contacted women by posing as foreign nationals. Six suspects have been arrested from a rented bungalow in the Vardhaman Nagar area.
The case came to light when a Nagpur woman filed a complaint with the police. According to the complaint, some people contacted her through a matrimonial platform and claimed to be foreign nationals.
It is alleged that after winning the woman's trust, the suspects told her they were sending her an expensive gift. They then said the parcel had been held up by the customs department and asked for money in the name of customs clearance fees and other charges.
The complaint also says that even after receiving the money, the accused kept demanding more, citing different reasons. It is stated that after taking the money from the woman, the suspects cut off contact with her.
After receiving the complaint, the Crime Branch began an investigation. Under the supervision of DCP Deepak Agrawal, police laid a trap and arrested six suspects from the rented bungalow in Vardhaman Nagar.
Police suspect the gang sent the money obtained through the alleged fraud to Dubai through hawala. An investigation is under way to confirm these suspected transactions. Investigators are also examining whether the money allegedly collected actually reached Dubai through a hawala channel.
Police are also trying to establish whether the gang targeted other women in the same way. The accused's mobile phones, digital records and money transactions are being examined for this. More information is expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
